Cables of many forms are pervasive in foodservice equipment. A cable is a wire or grouping of wires usually insulated and held together within an overall sheath. The assembly is used for the transmission of electrical power or electrical signals to and from various components within a piece of equipment. Cables may be housed internally such as with ribbon cables, or may be external such as with power cords. An electrical cable is an assembly of one or more wires running side by side or bundled, which is used to carry electric current.

A cable assembly is the composition of one or more electrical cables and their corresponding connectors. A cable assembly is not necessarily suitable for connecting two devices but can be a partial product (e.g. to be soldered onto a printed circuit board with a connector mounted to the housing). Cable assemblies can also take the form of a cable tree or cable harness, used to connect many terminals together.

Controls of all kinds are integral parts of restaurant equipment operation. A control is a switch or other device by which a machine is regulated. A control may be manual or automatically operated. An electro-mechanical control typically consists of multiple relays, timers, and/or counters wired together on an enclosure panel. Electro-mechanical control is also referred to simply as "Relay Control", which is a more accurate term since solid state electronic relays, timers, and counters are standard components. Contactors, motor and compressor starters, valves, thermostats, and other output devices are used to turn on/off motors, indicator lights, heating elements, and other components used in the equipment.

Universal Serial Bus (USB) is an industry standard that establishes specifications for cables and connectors and protocols for connection, communication and power supply between computers and equipment or peripheral devices.  In commercial foodservice equipment, a USB port may allow for service diagnostics or automated programming updates (e.g. with the introduction of new menu items with distinct cook times and temperatures).
